American Social Media Personality Penalized Following Mass E-Bike Gathering on Sydney Harbour Bridge
New South Wales authorities have issued a fine against an US-based online influencer and handed out two traffic infringement notices for reported reckless operation after a large group of electric bicycle users converged on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the busy commute on Tuesday.
The Incident: A Prohibited Ride
A group of approximately 40 individuals operating electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The assembly then turned around and traveled through the city’s CBD and Haymarket.
"This had a risk of people to be injured and killed," stated a senior police official the officer on Wednesday.
Police indicated they did not chase right away the group out of safety concerns but rather found the group at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.
Penalties Issued for Influencer
On Saturday, authorities stated they had issued the American online personality who goes by Sur Ronster, 26, with two traffic infringement notices for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), carrying a fine of $562 and penalty points each, connected to the bridge ride-out. They added that the investigation is ongoing.
The influencer is said to have more than 3.4m followers on YouTube and over 1.2m on the social media app.
Creator's Response
The content creator gave comments to a local publication recently after the incident spread rapidly on news sites and social media, saying he regretted giving "the biking community" a negative image.
"I accept the blame. That was among the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he said. "I’m coming here as a guest, and I intend to come here respecting the rules and standards of the city. When I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a ride-out, it was just to say hi under the bridge."
"I did not know the area well, it was my fault we ended up on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group rides the full length of the bridge and turns around, an illegal act. Or we turn around, essentially, before entering the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to turn around."
National Debate on E-Bike Regulation
The spate of e-bikes on roads nationwide has sparked growing calls for stricter rules. The federal health minister, the minister, commented that illegal ebikes were a "total menace on the road."
"Kids have done stupid things on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the harm that are presenting at our hospital emergency departments are absolutely devastating," the minister said. "We’ve got to make sure we stop these things coming into the country [and] officers are given the powers to take strong action, to confiscate them, to destroy them, to destroy them."
The state recorded 226 injuries associated with ebikes in the previous year. However, in the initial half of 2025, that figure jumped to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four deaths.
